Words Worth English Language Lab is a communication skills programme, the success of which largely depends on students’ interaction and participation in class, triggered through teaching-learning content catering to various learning styles.

Learners have different learning styles. The way learners assimilate a taught element varies with each learner. The processing, comprehending and the retaining of information can be done in a number of ways. Some learners find verbal instructions ideal for learning, others prefer physical involvement to trigger their learning juices. These individual learning styles depend upon factors like their cognitive and emotional levels. The environment of the learners is another determining factor that decides these learning styles.

Whatever be the reason, it is not to be denied that the learning styles of the learners affect learning to a large extent. This is why an ideal classroom scenario should cater to the various learning styles, with the teaching-learning experience provided in the class ideally catering to all of them.

It is commonly accepted that, student learning styles can be categorised as: visual, auditory, kinesthetic learning and reading/writing as preferential learning. It is understood that while each learner may have an inclination to a particular learning style, he/she is influenced by each of the learning styles stated above.

Thus an ideal learning session would comprise of a combination of: audio-visual based content, kinesthetic stimulants providing opportunity to participate through role play, and tools to allow for reading and writing.

Words Worth English Language Lab hence is a wholesome software that not only provides an audio-visual teaching and learning content, but also enhances learning and recall using workbooks as visual stimulants. The workbooks used during the ILT sessions comprise of the very visuals used in the ILT software. The learners use these workbooks to both prepare for individual responses and to participate in the interactive session taking place during these sessions.

The visuals in the workbooks, be the images or content reflections of the software help the learners to recall the session better when referred to in the future. The use of these workbooks help the learners in associating class dynamics triggered during a particular session and the learning that ensued then; something that is totally missed if writing limited only to non-visual tools like notebooks.

The importance of using these workbooks in enhancing learning cannot be mitigated. The various learning styles are fully exploited to stimulate learning and retention of information when these specially
